Let me talk a bit about the training I received as a member of the Peter Hurley Headshot Crew. I’ve spent the past several years working with the Crew, a global network of the finest headshot photographers. There are some 15,000 members and of those, fewer than 120 (as of this writing) are designated as Peter Hurley associates.
We meet several times each week on video conference calls to go over headshot and portrait photography and to discuss the business and value of headshot photography. It’s all led by the legendary Peter Hurley, the world’s foremost headshot photographer who is based in New York City and travels the world not only making photos but espousing the value of capturing captivating expressions from people who stand in front of our cameras.
The Crew is all about attention to detail. It’s more than just making sure the lighting is configured properly, although that’s important. We coach best ways to edit images soe people look good and still true to themselves. But the biggest benefit is hashing out ways to interact with people so we get them to smile natural smiles, feel confident and relaxed _ and so they walk away happy with experience of being in front of the camera.
We are sticklers for all of these details because they matter and make a huge difference in whether your headshot exudes that powerful combination of confidence and approachability.
To become an associate, one must produce a gallery of at least 15 headshots that meet Peter Hurley’s standards. It can be a painful and ego-blowing experience to be critiqued by The Man himself because he has very exacting and high standards. But if you put the time and effort into it, it is incredibly rewarding to finally hit your stride and consistently produce headshots that meet the grade.
The network of photographers provides endless opportunities to learn from some of the very best. One of my absolute favorites is Geneva, Switzerland-based Patric Pop. Not only are his photos amazing but his approach to the craft is grounded in his ability to connect with so many different personalities. He’s fluent in multiple languages: English, Italian, French and German. To top it off, he’s managing director of a yoga studio! If you happen to be traveling overseas and are looking for a top-notch headshot photographer, he’s your man. My own journey from a Headshot Crew protege to Associate took a little over a year. I have been blessed to meet so many wonderful people along the way who stepped in front of my camera and helped me learn how to elevate my game. And I’m proud that I am the only associate in Boise _ and actually none closer than at least a 6-hour drive away.
Becoming associate is not the end of the journey. I continue to hone my craft, learn from each session and remain committed to ensuring your headshot session leaves you feeling great about yourself and how you look.
